Avril Lavigne's agency inexplicably comes out against the RIAA.. Given that at present the music industry is seeking to co-opt anti-terrorist legislation designed to be used only in the preservation of human life to protect its intellectual property, this may not be the last example of an agency realising how much good PR can be gained by fairly small cash expenditure.

Elsewhere the international war against terror is oddly like Risk.

World peace: A rare but strangely satisfying end to the game. When there are no terrorists on the board, all remaining Empires can claim world peace, give each other a hug and go home knowing that they've learnt something special. This has happened once so far.

Speaking of games, and specifically the playing of silly buggers, you will be shocked to discover that people who administrate MMORGPs have no clue whatsoever.

Blizzard's stance was clear that recruiting for a guild using "GLBT" was inappropriate as, the company said, it may "incite certain responses in other players that will allow for discussion that we feel has no place in our game."

That is, if you mention t3h gayness, it will only upset people, who will then make with the homophobia, which will therefore be the fault of the gays. Thank God the civil rights movement in 1960s America was largely unmoderated.

Along with the many cruel and unmerited innuendi delivered on the subject of Ultra Magnus' sexuality, we occasionally hear voices raised in opposition to his leadership skills. In particular, there is a general supposition that his periods of leadership do not compare well with the more familiar management style of an Optimus Prime.

However. it's worth mentioning, I think, that the presence of Ultra Magnus in an executive capacity indicates that something has already gone very seriously wrong. Realistically, most of the Decepticons' plans, while incontestably evil, are also pretty useless. Hypnotic car washes, hugely energy-intensive ways to create energy, robot insects and so on. Left to their own devices, the natural state of a Decepticon is failure. It's sad, but there you go. That's what happens when you don't listen to Soundwave.

As such, if the Autobots found themselves in a situation where Ultra Magnus was in charge, it was ipso facto a situation on top of which Optimus Prime had already clearly failed to get, resulting in his deactivation, incarceration or abduction into a cyborg monkey-oriented hallucinatory parallel dimension. This is the very opposite of management by exception - referring problems that have proven too great for one executive to a second executive with significantly less management experience.

By the same token, any situation that Ultra Magnus found himself dealing with had already spiralled wildly out of control, requiring vast resources and crisis management skills to bring under control. Given how tough it must have been for him in a largely homophobic giant robot environment, it's amazing how well he did.

As a reward for those of you who got through that and have Macs (and if not, why not etc), I've been enjoying tickr, which runs a stream of Flickr images by tag, title or user name across your screen. Very nice.

For those who missed it, happy Sanctity of Human Life Day! I browse with images turned off, but i assume that DailyKos is as four-square behind this new celebration of the sanctity of human life as I am.

Another plus mark for the mighty US of A - smug liberals will no longer be able to accuse it of being the world's leading consumer of our precioues resources. What matters it that China is spreading its consumption across a buckload more people? The point is, they shouldn't want to consume. They're not used to it.

Furthermore, without plastics and paper, the US would not be able to produce genius products like Left Behind: the Board Game. Tell me when our atheist friends would have come up with that, eh? Never, that's when, and if you say different you're a pinko.

I was disappointed to find that Tomasi di Lampedusa's The Leopard featured not one actual leopard. Once it became clear that the narrative had bedded down in a leopard-free evironment, I figured that the next logical step would be that the prince who has il gattopardo as an emblem and whose huge, manly physique is often admiringly noted, would equip himself with the finest gadgetry of the late 19th Century, like in that totally rocking flick LXG, dress in a tight-fitting yellow and black body suit and fight crime as the mysterious Leopard. Even at the end, I yet hoped that perhaps he might be reincarnated as a real live cocking leopard, but to no avail.

"Foke" is my -- a warrior's --
term for intense concentration, extreme undivided attention. Humanity
[collectively] calls it focus. The "us" in foc[us] connotes "we" to me;
a collective; a group. I don't accept that. And do not find it
inspiring. I changed the spelling, ergo, its meaning to suit myself,
using it as a self-motivational cue that Life is Lone: I am in charge
and control of myself -- or as I roar in my mind during those bouts of
intense concentration, extreme undivided attention: "Take care of You
and Yours, Warrior. Find your Foke."

Well, foke me.
