Nellie Wallace, invited to tour with the last music-hall show in Britain, refused point-blank to share a bill with Lily Morris. At first she explained this reluctance on the grounds that having two female comics on the bill was overegging the pudding. When reassured that her more patter-based style made them very distinct propositions, she responded that she was not sharing a bill with Morris "and her dirty drawers". The impressario, somewhat shocked, assured her that Lily's clothing was spotless. "On top" came the gnomic response.

This anecdote makes me inordinately happy.
