My obsession with books about inept futurology has now spanned the well-meaning The Internet by JC Herz, Rheingold's the Virtual Community and, most recently, Terry Venables' and Gordon Williams' They Used to Play on Grass, an eerily prescient vision of football in the future. It's an odd book - the cockney rhyming slang and the lengthy disquisitions on great players of the 50s and 60s were presumably mainly Venables' contribution, and they seem at times to be dropped in great meteoric chunks into the narrative, but the British Cup (not a reality yet but much mooted), the covered stadia, the commercial endorsements and the precocious winger with ludicrous hair heading for his first million at 19 all ring true, although the football of the future is by our standards hopelessly parochial in its training methods and the players speak enviously of wages of three hundred pounds a week. Also, the team we follow to its semi-final with Rangers has no foreign players (barring a scottish centre-back and a Welsh midfielder) and only one black player, which seems a bit off for a London club in this D. and A.

Unfortunately, the whole thng is undermined rather by the insistence on the astroturf pitch as a symbol of process. Luton town as the birthplace of the future?

I'm on the hunt now for good teen romances. More later.
